Astros Prospect Cam Smith Making Strong First Impression at Spring Training

They say you only get one chance to make a first impression, and newly acquired Astros prospect Cam Smith has stood out this spring before games have even started.

The 21-year-old, who was a first round pick by the Cubs in 2024, was acquired back in December in the deal that sent Kyle Tucker to Chicago. While the Astros received two major league players in the deal, the highlight was infielder Cam Smith.

Smith has stood out in spring so far, just for his raw size. The former first round pick stands at 6’3″ and is listed at 224 lbs, but he looks to be in really good shape this spring. Yes I know… everyone is in the “best shape of their lives.” Even Chandler Rome of the Athletic noted how big Smith is. Michael Schwab also shared this picture from Smith’s Instagram.

Dana Brown had glowing comments about Smith early on. “I think he has a chance to be an aircraft carrier,” Dana Brown said in reference to Smith being able to carry a franchise.

Carrying the franchise could come at his natural position of third base, or maybe even in the outfield.

“For the January camp, he [Dana Brown] mentioned right field to me and just taking reps there because he wants me to see how I move and how comfortable I am over there, because obviously there are some holes that need to be filled,” Smith told Matt Thomas of Sports Talk 790.

Smith went on to say that Espada likes him at third base and he expects to get some run at both positions this spring. Smith did mention that he is most comfortable at third base and he was a shortstop his whole life until he got to college.

Rather he ends up playing third base or right field, Smith has the offensive ability to be a game changer for a franchise. His size has stood out so far this spring, and soon enough, we will get to see some live reps in games to see what he can do.
