Astros Ink Pair Of Dominican Pitchers

Credit: Kiel Maddox

This week, on top of the MLB Draft, the Astros signed a pair of Dominican pitching prospects, according to the minor league transactions page.

The first pitching prospect is right-hander Eddy Mota. Mota, who is 20-years-old, joins the Astros system from the Dominican Republic. He is listed at 6’3″ and 210 lbs. The second prospect is left-hander Miguel Nunez. Nunez is 19-years-old and also from the Dominican Republic. He is listed at 6’2″ and 180 lbs.

They were both assigned to the Dominican Summer League teams in the Astros system and should start playing in games this summer. Other information is limited on them right now, but now that they are signed we should start getting some reports. Nice to see the Astros continue to add arms through the international signing market.

Woodpeckers Young Hitters Finding Groove

Coming into the season, we knew the Woodpeckers offense had the chance to be fun with the amount of young prospects on the team. Now at the All-Star break the Woodpeckers have five teenagers with an OPS of over .700. Alejandro Nunez is at .730, Kenni Gomez is at .720, Chase Jaworsky is at .711, Nehomar Ochoa is at .709 and Jancel Villarroel is .742 after 19 games. There have been ups and downs, but all of them have seen a lot of growth and positives over the last month or two.

Ullola, Nezuh Battle For Strikeout Leader

Miguel Ullola and Jackson Nezuh, two right-handers in the system, are currently in a tight race for who is going to lead the Astros minor league system in strikeouts. Ullola has 105 K in 81.1 innings. Nezuh has 105 K in 81.2 innings. They have both allowed exactly 40 earned runs each too. Nezuh has gained ground on Ullula, who has led for most of the season, after he picked up 26 K in 15 innings in July for the Woodpeckers. This will be a fun race to watch.
