This past week Logan Cerny has put the Carolina League on notice. The former 10th round pick was sent to Houston this past offseason in the Garrett Stubbs trade with the Phillies. Cerny is in his first full season in Single-A Fayetteville and has made the most of his opportunity. The Woodpeckers outfielder batted .476 with two doubles, three homeruns, thirteen RBI’s and three stolen bases over this past week. Those numbers earned him his first ever Single-A Player of the Week honors for the Carolina League.
This is the second time this season Cerny has showed flashes. Back in April, he went on a tear homering three times in three straight games while driving in eight runs over one week. He has had ups and downs this season but his power and speed combination provides some excitement. Cerny is slashing .242/.335/.484 on the season with 10 homeruns, 35 RBI’s and 19 stolen bases.
He has always flashed potential including plus speed and a strong arm that played into him splitting time in the outfield and catcher back in high school at Parkview Prep. Cerny would end up committing to Troy University where he had a very productive college career.
He spent three seasons there with his best coming in 2021. He had a .332/.424/.694 slash line with 15 home runs, 47 RBI’s and showed the speed swiping twelve bags. His combination of power and speed caught the attention of major league ballclubs. One down side with Cerny was his strikeout percentage but it was something clubs were willing to take a chance on.
Cerny’s raw tools made it tough for the Phillies to pass on him during day two of the draft. He was still young for his college class and with a new swing adjustment and a different approach now, he he has the tools to be successful. When the Stubbs trade went down, the Astros had a lot to be excited about giving away their third-string catcher for a promising young prospect.
The Astros have always been drawn to strong and speedy outfielders and Cerny flashes potential the same way guys like Ronnie Dawson, Alex McKenna, Jordan Brewer, Zach Daniels and others have. The rare combination of strength and speed and pure athleticism Cerny possess makes it hard to not get excited about the 22-year old. The potential is there and if he continues to improve over the next couple of years, he can carve himself out a big league career.
