Astros Minor League Recap: May 6th, 2017

Another day of baseball in the books. See how the teams and prospects performed in their games last night.

AAA: Fresno Grizzlies (13-17) lost 19-7 (BOX SCORE)

Fresno took the loss in a heavy offensive game, as the first two pitchers for Fresno were rocked in the first 4 innings. Mike Hauschild, recently re-acquired from the Texas Rangers, allowed 9 runs on 8 hits and 6 walks in 3 innings. Keegan Yuhl came in to relieve Hauschild and allowed 8 runs on 7 hits and one walk in only 0.1 IP. The Grizzlies’ offense had two hit games from Fisher, Kemmer, Aplin, and Stassi, but 7 runs wouldn’t come nearly close enough to get the win.

Note: During his current 11-Game Hitting Streak, Derek Fisher has not walked and has raised his batting average from .254 to .325.

AA: Corpus Christi Hooks (15-14) lost 3-2 (BOX SCORE)

Kent Emanuel got the start for Corpus Christi and went 5 innings allowing only 3 runs, which all came in the 4th inning. Dean Deetz came in relief and pitched 4 innings of shutout ball, continuing the recent string of dominance he has been putting on display. Corpus couldn’t get much going offensively, as they were unable to get on the board until the 8th inning when 2B Tyler Wolfe hit a 2-Run HR to score SS Mott Hyde. That is all the offense could string together in the loss despite the solid pitching.

Note: Deetz now has a 0.79 ERA on the season, having allowed only 2 ER in 22.2 IP

A+: Buies Creek Astros (19-11) lost 8-4 (BOX SCORE)

Buies Creek was the first team to scratch across a run in the 4th inning on Tucker’s 5th HR of the young season, but the Pelicans struck back by scoring the next 7 over the next two innings. Justin Ferrell pitched very well for the first 4 innings but was taken out after allowing his 4th run with one out in the 5th. Ralph Garza took over but allowed another 3 runs in the 5th before his day was over. Alex Winkelman pitched the remaining 3 innings and pitched exceptionally well, allowing only 2 hits and 1 unearned run, striking out 6. Martin and Porter accounted for the rest of the Buies Creek offense, though they did put up another 3 runs in the remaining two innings.

Note: Tucker is hitting .311 with 9 HR, 40 RBI in 44 High-A games

A: Quad Cities River Bandits (15-12) lost 13-3 (BOX SCORE)

Forrest Whitley got the start for the River Bandits and was hit hard out of the gates. In the 1st inning, Whitley allowed 4 runs, all earned, on 5 hits. Silvering lining, however, was that every out he recorded was via Strikeout. Whitley would go only 2 innings until Reggie Johnson would come in to allow another 5 runs. The Captains would proceed to go up 10-0 before the River Bandits would get on the board with their only 3 runs of the game.

Note: Forrest Whitley has struck out 25 batters in only 12 innings, averaging 18.75 K/9

Today’s starters according to MiLB.com:

FRE: Edison Frias (5.40 ERA)

CC:  Josh James (2.18 ERA)

BC: Matt Bower (3.57 ERA)

QC: Ryan Hartman (3.05 ERA)
