Houston Astros Minor League Recap: May 28th

All four teams in action with Fresno the only team going home with a win. See how the prospects performed last night.

AAA: Fresno Grizzlies (22-26) won 8-4 (BOX SCORE)

Fresno wins in a walk-off. Fresno jumped out to a 3-0 lead with Kemmer scoring on an error and Duffy hitting a 2 run HR, his 5th of the season. Shirley got the start and was solid allowing 3 earned runs in 5.2 innings. Fresno added another run with a bases loaded walk to Reed. Jankowski pitched in relief of Shirley giving up 1 run but striking out 3 in 1.1 innings. In the bottom of the 8th Reed walked and was subsequently pinch ran for by Worth, which turned out a be a huge move. Hoyt and Fields both pitched scoreless innings to bring the game to the 9th tied 4-4. A double and two walks set up the bases loaded for Reed’s spot, occupied now by Worth. Worth sent Fresno home with a win by crushing a walk-off grandslam to LF.

AA: Corpus Christi Hooks (29-19) lost 6-5 (BOX SCORE)

Hooks lost a tough one in 12 innings. The Hooks jumped out to an early lead with 4 runs in the 3rd inning. That inning went like this: Gomez single, Bregman RBI double, Fisher RBI single, Davis 2 run HR. Grills got the start for the Hooks and gave up 3 runs, 1 earned run, all in the 5th inning. Martes came on in relief and had a solid outing striking out 3 and allowing 1 earned run in 3 innings. They went into the 7th down a run and another RBI single from Fisher tied it up. McCurry pitched two scoreless innings in relief to include 4 strikeouts. The game would stay scoreless until the 12th where NW Arkansas was able to get a run off of Peterson but unfortunately, the Hooks weren’t able to answer.

A+: Lancaster Jethawks (22-25) lost 5-3 (BOX SCORE)

Big 8th inning propels High Desert. James got the start and was solid allowing 2 earned runs over 5 innings with 5 strikeouts. Lancaster responded with 2 runs in the bottom of the 4th inning thanks to an RBI groundout for Ferguson and an RBI single for Ritchie. Thornton pitched in relief of James and tossed two scoreless frames before giving up the 3 runs in the 8th inning. Martin hit a solo HR in the 9th, his 6th of the season, to bring Lancaster closer but that is all they would get.

A: Quad Cities River Bandits (21-27) lost 9-2 (BOX SCORE)

This game was closer than the score shows as Peoria scored 7 runs in the last 3 innings. Quiala got the start for QC and allowed 2 earned runs over 5 innings, his best start as a River Bandit. QC got on the board with a Duarte sac fly in the bottom of the 3rd. They would get one more run in the 7th and that would do it for the scoring. Murphy pitched in relief of Quiala and allowed 7 runs, just 2 earned, over the final 4 innings. Goedert and Hermelyn both had two hits last night.

FRE: Brad Peacock (5.67 ERA)
