Astros Minor League Recap: August 1st

AAA: Sugar Land Space Cowboys (56-50) won 8-7 (BOX SCORE)

Sugar Land got on the board in the 2nd inning on a Shewmake groundout. Nezuh started for Sugar Land and allowed 4 runs, all on a grand slam, over 4.1 innings while striking out 9. The offense rallied for 4 runs in the 4th inning on a Biggio 2 run triple, Loperfido RBI double and Whitcomb RBI single. In the 7th, Alexander connected on a 2 run double to extend the lead. Roa came in for the 9th but allowed 3 runs as the Bees tied it up. In the bottom of the 9th, Sugar Land walked it off on a Delgado RBI double as they won 8-7.

Note: Loperfido is hitting .297 in Triple-A.


AA: Corpus Christi Hooks (48-53) won 7-0 (BOX SCORE)

The Hooks got on the board in the first inning scoring 3 runs on a Call sac fly and Sisneros 2 run single. They picked up another run in the 5th inning on a Sisneros RBI single. Mayer got the start and was dominant striking out 9 over 6 scoreless innings. The offense added 2 runs in the 8th inning on RBI singles from Encarnacion and Schiavone. In the 9th, Call connected on a solo home run, his 19th home run of the season. Mancini closed it out with 2 scoreless innings as the Hooks won 7-0.

Note: Mayer has a 2.61 ERA this season.


A+: Asheville Tourists (33-67) lost 11-3 (BOX SCORE)

Smith got the start for Asheville but struggled allowing 5 runs over 2 innings. He was relieved by Saunier who allowed 2 runs. The offense got on the board in the 4th on an error and Powell RBI double. The pen continued to struggle allowing another 4 runs as the Drive extended their lead. The offense got one back in the 9th on a Batista sac fly but that was it as Asheville fell 11-3.

Note: Powell is hitting .292 this season.


A: Fayetteville Woodpeckers (51-48) lost 10-8 (BOX SCORE)

Perez started for the Woodpeckers and struggled allowing 9 runs, 7 earned, over 4.1 innings. The offense got on the board in the 2nd inning on a Diaz 2 run single. They picked up 3 more runs in the 5th scoring 2 runs on an Alvarez groundout and one run on a De Leon RBI single. Carrera pitched in relief and went 4.2 innings allowing one run. The offense chipped away with a Luciano RBI single in the 6th, Nigh RBI double in the 7th and Sierra RBI single in the 8th. Unfortunately the comeback fell short as the Woodpeckers fell 10-8.

Note: Luciano has a .836 OPS this season.
