Astros Minor League Recap: May 23rd

Another day of Astros minor league baseball in the books! See the results below. Check out the previous day’s recap here.

AAA: Sugar Land Space Cowboys (29-19) won 5-4 (BOX SCORE)

Sugar Land fell behind 2-0 early but the offense responded right back with 2 runs on a Short solo HR and Bastidas RBI double. Brown got the start and allowed 4 runs over 4 innings. The offense got one back in the 6th on a Price RBI groundout and tied the game in the 7th on a Hamilton solo HR. Sugar Land took the lead in the 8th scoring a run on a wild pitch. Alexander tossed 4 scoreless innings in relief and Contreras closed it out with a scoreless 9th as Sugar Land won 5-4.

Note: Contreras has a 0.84 ERA this season.


AA: Corpus Christi Hooks (14-28) lost 1-0 (BOX SCORE)

Mancini started for the Hooks and pitched well allowing 1 run over 5.2 innings while striking out 4. Santa pitched well out of the pen tossing 3.1 scoreless innings. The offense collected 10 hits on the night but failed to score as the Hooks fell 1-0.

Note: Santa has a 1.21 ERA this season.


A+: Asheville Tourists (19-24) lost 10-5 (BOX SCORE)

Pena got the start but lasted just 1 inning as he allowed 4 runs. The offense responded with 3 in the first on a Gomez 3 run HR. Chirinos allowed 3 runs in relief as the Grasshoppers extended their lead. The offense got one run back in the 3rd on a Spence RBI single. Gillis went 4.1 innings in relief allowing 2 runs while striking out 7. Spence would add a solo HR in the 8th but that was it from the offense as Asheville fell 10-5.

Note: Spence is hitting .327 in High-A.


A: Fayetteville Woodpeckers (22-21) won 4-2 (BOX SCORE)

Ogando started for the Woodpeckers and allowed 2 runs over 4 innings of work. The Fayetteville offense got on the board in the first inning on a Powell RBI single. In the 2nd inning, the Woodpeckers got 2 more on RBI singles from Brutcher and Hernandez. Ochoa added a sac fly in the 6th inning to extend the lead. The pen was great with Brown tossing 3 scoreless and Almonte closing it out with 2 scoreless innings as the Woodpeckers won 4-2.

Note: Brutcher is hitting .336 this season.
