Astros Minor League Recap: July 5th, 2018

Another day of minor league baseball in the books. See the results below.

AAA: Fresno Grizzlies (50-36) lost 12-5 (BOX SCORE)

Thornton started for Fresno last night but struggled allowing 11 runs, 10 earned in just 1.1 innings. Reed provided the early offense with an RBI single in the first and a solo HR in the 6th. Tucker connected on a 2 run HR in the 7th after a Tanielu RBI double. The bullpen was solid but the early deficit was too much to overcome.

Note: Tucker has 24 2B, 14 HR, 66 RBI in 80 games this season.


AA: Corpus Christi Hooks (53-30) won 3-0 (BOX SCORE)

Whitley started for the Hooks but only lasted 0.2 innings before being pulled due to an oblique injury. He was relieved by Blanco who tossed 4 no hit innings with 8 strikeouts in his AA debut. Alvarez got the Hooks on the board in the first inning with an RBI single. The Hooks picked up another run in the 4th on a Birk sac fly. Alvarez added another RBI single in the 5th to make it 3-0. Winkelman closed the game out with 4.1 scoreless innings.

Note: Alvarez is hitting .323 with 12 HR, 46 RBI in 43 games this season.


A+: Buies Creek Astros (48-36) won 6-1 (BOX SCORE)

Sandoval has been rolling lately and last night was no different as he tossed 5 scoreless innings allowing just 1 hit with 9 strikeouts. The offense got on the board in the first inning on a Toro RBI double. They picked up 2 more runs in the 2nd on a Robinson RBI double and Bohanek RBI single. In the 8th inning, Toro and Duarte added solo HRs for a little insurance. Saldana allowed a run over 3 innings and Ramirez tossed a scoreless 9th to close it.

Note: Sandoval last 13 outings – 0.85 ERA, 63.0 IP, 41 H, 8 BB, 74 K


A: Quad Cities River Bandits (46-38) lost 2-1 (BOX SCORE)

Rough night for the Quad Cities offense. They didn’t record their first hit until the bottom of the 8th and they only picked up 1 run in the 9th on a passed ball. Donato started and was solid tossing 5 scoreless innings. The bullpen pitched well overall but allowed an unearned run in the 8th and Aqunio gave up the winning run in the 9th.

Note: Beer is hitting .440 with just 3 strikeouts in 7 games for Quad Cities.


A-: Tri-City ValleyCats (10-10) won 4-2 (BOX SCORE)
