Houston Astros Minor League Recap: August 1st

Another night of Astros minor league play is in the books. See how the prospects performed last night.

AAA: Fresno Grizzlies (59-49) won 7-3 (BOX SCORE)

Reed carried the Grizzlies to the win. In the top of the first Reed got Fresno on the board with a 2 run HR, his 15th HR in AAA. Frias made his second start in AAA and allowed 2 runs in the first, but that is all he would allow. He finished tossing 6 innings allowing just the 2 runs. Fresno scored again in the 3rd with Fontana scoring on a wild pitch. In the 4th inning Kemp drew a bases loaded walk to extend the lead to 4-2. Kemmer added some insurance with a 2 run HR in the 8th, his 10th HR of the season. Reed capped off his night with an RBI double in the 9th to make it a 7-3 game. Hoyt tossed a perfect 9th with a strikeout to seal it.

AA: Corpus Christi Hooks (64-44) won 7-4 (BOX SCORE)

Big 5th inning lifts Corpus to the win. Thornton made his second start in AA and went 6 innings allowing just 1 run with 0 BB/6 K. Corpus was shutout until the 5th where they put up 5 runs. In that inning they got a 2 run HR from Garcia, 2 run double from Davis and an RBI single from Fisher. The Hooks added another run on a Stubbs solo HR in the 7th inning, his 2nd HR in AA. San Antonio would attempt a comeback scoring 3 in the 8th but McDonald added some more insurance with a solo HR. West pitched a scoreless 9th to pick up the save.

  • Aaron West, RHP: 1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K (SAVE)

A+: Lancaster Jethawks (60-47) won 7-6 (BOX SCORE)

Dykxhoorn got the start for Lancaster last night going 4.1 innings allowing 3 runs with 5 strikeouts. The Jethawks entered the 7th inning down 4-0 but they would rally. In the 7th they put up 7 runs on a Duarte RBI single, Mizell run scoring single, Marlow 2 run double, and a Boyd 3 run HR. Lake Elsinore made it close scoring 2 runs in the 9th but Dorris was able to slam the door and pick up the save.

  • Brock Dyxkhoorn, RHP: 4.1 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 5 K
  • Scott Weathersby, RHP: 3.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K (WIN)
  • Jacob Dorris, RHP: 1.0 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 0 K (SAVE)

A: Quad Cities River Bandits (51-55) lost 5-4 (BOX SCORE)

Things started great for Quad Cities putting up 4 runs in the 1st inning. In the 1st they got an RBI groundout from McCall, Cesar RBI single, and a 2 run double from Roa. Unfortunately they would be shut out the rest of the game. Perez got the start and got roughed up early but finished tossing 5 innings and giving up 4 runs. He was relieved by Abreu who tossed 4 scoreless innings allowing just 2 hits. In the bottom of the 10th Beloit hit a walk-off HR to win it.

A-: Tri-City ValleyCats (23-20) played a doubleheader 

GAME 1 – won 2-1 (BOX SCORE)

GAME 2 – lost 7-3 (BOX SCORE)

ROOKIE: Greeneville Astros (21-18) won 9-2 (BOX SCORE)
