Houston Astros Minor League Recap: May 17th

All four teams in the Astros system in action with two teams winning and two teams losing last night. See how the prospects performed last night.

AAA: Fresno Grizzlies (15-23) lost 2-1 (BOX SCORE)

Fresno continues to struggle with the bats, which is somewhat expect with Reed on the DL and the promotions of Kemp and Moran. Fresno only managed five hits last night, and all but one were singles. In the second Stassi tripled and scored on a groundout from Aplin. That was it for the offense. Shirley got the start and wasn’t bad allowing 2 ER over 5.2 innings. Guduan, Gustave, and Hoyt combined to go the final 2.1 innings with no runs scoring.

AA: Corpus Christi Hooks (22-15) won 2-1 (BOX SCORE)

Corpus keeps finding a way to win, their 8th win in a row. They won this one in 13 innings. Corpus got the scoring started with an RBI groundout from Alex Bregman. Martes got the start and had probably his best start of the season going 6 innings and allowing just 1 run with 5 strikeouts. The only run Martes gave up was in the 6th inning. The game would go scoreless until the top of the 13th when Woodward hit a solo HR, his first of the season, to give the Hooks the lead. Heredia and West both threw three scoreless innings and McCurry finished the 13th to record the save.

A+: Lancaster Jethawks (16-20) won 5-3 (BOX SCORE)

Lancaster wins a thriller with a big 8th innings. The Jethawks got the scoring started with two runs in the bottom of the 3rd thanks to a 2 run single from Stubbs. Thornton got the start and pitched well, but gave up three runs in the 5th inning. He went five innings allowing just the three runs and striking out four. In the bottom of the 8th an sac fly from Tanielu tied the game at 3. Recent call-up Brooks Marlow came up with two on in the 8th inning and hit a 2 run double to left field to give the Jethawks a 5-3 lead. Joshua James pitched the final four innings allowing just one hit and no runs.

A: Quad Cities River Bandits (15-22) lost 6-0 (BOX SCORE)

Rough day offensively as Quad Cities only managed five hits, all singles. Murphy got the start and gave 4 runs and 7 hits over 2.1 innings. Whitt was strong in relief allowing zero runs in 2.2 innings. Kyle Tucker didn’t have a hit but a positive note, he hit what would have been a grand slam but the umpires ruled it foul. It appears many thought it was fair but no replays available.

Today’s starters according to MiLB.com:

FRE: OFF

CC: Cy Sneed (3.42 ERA)

LAN: Scott Weathersby (6.58 ERA)

QC: Kevin McCanna (3.96 ERA)
