Pipeline Report: Janek Heating Up, De Leon Promoted

Walker Janek | Credit: Corpus Christi Hooks

Another busy week down on the farm as the season continues to roll on. Here’s a look at some of the biggest developments across the system with this week’s Pipeline Report.

System Spotlight

Walker Janek – C – Corpus Christi

Janek was selected by the Astros in the first round of the 2024 MLB Draft out of Sam Houston State. He put together a solid first full season in 2025, batting .263 with 21 doubles, 12 home runs and 30 stolen bases at High-A Asheville. He opened the 2026 season with Corpus Christi but struggled out of the gate, hitting just .123 with one home run in April. In early May, he landed on the injured list and then suffered another setback during a rehab assignment in June.

After rehabbing with the FCL Astros, Janek returned to Corpus Christi in mid-July. While it’s still a small sample, he has looked like a completely different hitter. Over his last seven games, Janek is batting .480 with two doubles, four home runs, 10 RBIs and five stolen bases. Including his rehab games in the Florida Complex League, he is hitting .255 with an .839 OPS this season.

It’s an encouraging turnaround for one of the Astros’ top prospects and a reminder of the impact he can make when healthy.

Under-the-Radar Performer

Yamal Encarnacion – INF – Corpus Christi

Encarnacion has been in the Astros organization since signing as an international free agent in January 2021. He has steadily climbed the minor league ladder, posting solid numbers along the way, and earned an assignment to Double-A Corpus Christi to begin the 2026 season. At 22 years old, he’s putting together the best season of his professional career.

Overall, Encarnacion is hitting .261 with 18 doubles, three triples, five home runs and 44 stolen bases for the Hooks. He’s been especially hot of late, batting .404 over his last stretch while adding three doubles, two triples and four stolen bases. Even more impressive, he has already set career highs in doubles, home runs and stolen bases, and there’s still plenty of season left.

One Transaction This Week

Luis De Leon – C – Fayetteville

Promotion Watch

Who Could Be Next?

I think Bryce Mayer has earned a promotion, and maybe not just to Triple-A. The Astros’ 16th-round pick in 2024 has been dominant for Corpus Christi, posting a 2.86 ERA with 91 strikeouts over 63 innings this season.

As impressive as those numbers are, he’s taken it to another level recently. Over his last five outings, the right-hander owns a 0.36 ERA with 32 strikeouts in 24.2 innings while allowing just 11 hits.

A promotion to Triple-A feels well deserved, but it wouldn’t surprise me if the Astros at least considered bypassing Sugar Land altogether should a need arise at the major league level.

Quick Hits

  • The Woodpeckers (Single-A) continue to lead the Astros system in stolen bases with 241. More on that here.
  • FCL Astros won the FCL Championship finishing with a 42-11 record and 3-0 in the playoffs.a
  • Chase Call lead the system in home runs (8) and runs batted in (24) in the month of July.
  • Sebastian Mendez has 28 stolen bases in July in the DSL.
  • Nolan DeVos has a 2.16 ERA in two Double-A outings.
