On Wednesday, MLB announced that top prospect Kevin Alvarez will represent the organization at the All-Star Futures Game, which will take place on Sunday, July 12 in Philadelphia. Over the last two years, the Astros have sent a pitcher to represent the organization, with AJ Blubaugh earning the honor in 2024 and Alimber Santa representing the Astros in 2025.
Alvarez, who signed for $2 million out of Cuba last year, immediately became one of the top prospects in the Astros system. In his first season in the Dominican Summer League, Alvarez hit .301 with a .874 OPS, earning himself a spot on the DSL All-Star team.
The Astros challenged the 18-year-old by sending him straight to full-season baseball to start the 2026 season, and he has handled the challenge well. Through 55 games, the outfielder is hitting .266 with 16 doubles, six home runs, eight stolen bases and a .759 OPS for the Woodpeckers.
Alvarez is ranked either No. 1 or No. 2 in the system, depending on which resource you are looking at, and he truly represents what the Astros future could look like. A young, athletic player with power, the ability to impact the game in multiple ways, and the potential to be a cornerstone piece for the next wave of Astros talent.
