Astros Minor League Recap: July 1st

Another day of minor league baseball is in the books. See the results below. Check out the previous day’s recap here.

AAA: Sugar Land Space Cowboys (38-44) won 4-3 (BOX SCORE)

Sugar Land got on the board in the first inning on a Dezenzo RBI single. They picked up a run in the third on a Whitcomb RBI single and a run in the 4th on a Ferreras RBI single. McCullers made a rehab start and went 4 innings allowing 1 run with 3 strikeouts. After OKC tied it in the 5th, Ferreras gave Sugar Land the lead with an RBI single in the 6th. The pen was great the rest of the way tossing 4 scoreless innings to close out the 4-3 win.

Note: Ferreras is hitting .377 in Triple-A.


AA: Corpus Christi Hooks (36-40) won 5-3 (BOX SCORE)

Blanco made a rehab start for the Hooks and went 4.1 innings allowing 3 runs, 2 earned. The Hooks entered the 8th inning down 3-0 but rallied for 4 runs on a Brutcher RBI single, a Schiavone steal of home, Bush RBI double and Whitaker sac fly. The Hooks got an insurance run in the 9th on an Austin sac bunt. Mayer went the final 4 inning without allowing a run and striking out 5 as he closed down the 5-3 win.

Note: Mayer has 67 K over 48 innings this season.


A+: Asheville Tourists (24-52) won 10-8 (BOX SCORE)

Asheville got on the board in the first inning on a Call 2 run single. Batista added an RBI single in the 2nd inning. In the 4th, the offense added 3 runs on a Batista RBI double and Thomas 2 run home run. Brown added an RBI single in the 5th and in the 6th, the offense got 3 more runs on a Call 3 run home run. Santos got the start and tossed 6 scoreless innings with 4 strikeouts. The pen allowed 8 runs late but they were able to hold on for the save as Asheville won 10-8.

Note: Thomas has a .925 OPS this season.


A: Fayetteville Woodpeckers (38-38) won 9-5 (BOX SCORE)

The Woodpeckers got on the board in the 3rd inning on a Flores RBI groundout and a Nigh RBI single in the 4th. In the 5th inning, Neyens connected on a solo home run. Beck got the start for the Woodpeckers and pitched well tossing 5 scoreless innings with 5 strikeouts. After scoring a run on an error in the 6th, the Woodpeckers got 2 more runs in the 7th on Nigh and Huezo bases loaded walks. Verdugo went the final 4 innings allowing 5 runs but closed out the 9-5 win.

Note: Neyens has a .923 OPS this season.
