Let’s take a look at the best performances in the Astros system in May.

*Just a note, these are my picks for the month*

Previous POTM:

April

AAA: Sugar Land Space Cowboys

HITTER: Cavan Biggio, INF

  • May Stats: 21 G, .303 BA/.467 OBP/.561 SLG, 2 2B, 5 HR, 15 RBI

Biggio got off to a slow start this year but really turned it on in May for Sugar Land. He played in 21 games and hit .303 with 2 doubles, 5 home runs, 15 runs batted in and an impressive 20 walks to just 15 strikeouts.

PITCHER: Alimber Santa, RHP

  • May Stats: 10 G, 0.75 ERA, 12.0 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 14 SO

It was a rough month for the Sugar Land pitching but Santa, who earned a call-up in May, was great allowing 1 run over 7 innings while striking out 10. He also tossed 5 no-hit innings in the MLB so far, all coming in May.

AA: Corpus Christi Hooks

HITTER: Trevor Austin, INF

  • May Stats: 24 G, .286 BA/.394 OBP/.500 SLG, 5 2B, 2 3B, 3 HR, 11 RBI, SB

Austin was signed as an undrafted free agent following the 2024 draft. He’s put together a strong 2026 campaign and was great in May. In 24 games for the Hooks, Austin hit .286 with 5 doubles, 2 triples, 3 home runs and 11 runs batted in. He has a .851 OPS this season.

PITCHER: Bryce Mayer, RHP

  • May Stats: 4 G, 2.40 ERA, 15.0 IP, 7 H, 4 ER, 11 BB, 21 SO

Mayer has followed up his strong 2025 season with an even better 2026. In May he was great posting a 2.40 ERA while striking out 21 batters over 15 innings. He also allowed just 7 hits. On the season, he has a 3.41 ERA with 46 strikeouts over 29 innings in Double-A.

A+: Asheville Tourists

HITTER: Jason Schiavone, C

  • May Stats: 26 G, .297 BA/.462 OBP/.703 SLG, 7 2B, 10 HR, 23 RBI, 7 SB

Schiavone only spent 15 games in Asheville in May, but the numbers were too strong too ignore. In those 15 games he hit .364 with 8 home runs, 19 runs batted in and a 1.441 OPS. He got promoted to Double-A where he finished the month with 10 home runs, 23 tuns batted in and 1.165 OPS.

Honorable Mention: Caden Powell, OF

PITCHER: Cole Hertzler, RHP

  • May Stats: 4 G, 4.15 ERA, 17.1 IP, 12 H, 8 ER, 9 BB, 26 K

After being on the list for April, Hertlzer gets a repeat here. The Asheville pitching staff had some troubles in May but Hertzler was a bright spot. While he had a 4.15 ERA, he struck out 26 batters over 17.1 innings allowing just 12 hits. Overall this year he has 57 strikeouts in 39 innings.

A: Fayetteville Woodpeckers

HITTER: Kevin Alvarez, OF

  • May Stats: 21 G, .300 BA/.366 OBP/.538 SLG, 7 2B, 4 HR, 14 RBI, 9 BB/13 SO

Alvarez got off to a solid start for a teenager in full-season baseball, but he really turned it on in May. The 18-year-old hit .300 with 7 doubles, 4 home runs, 14 runs batted in and a .903 OPS over 21 games for the Woodpeckers. He is quickly proving why he is one of the Astros top prospects.

PITCHER: Kellan Oakes, RHP

  • May Stats: 4 G, 1.50 ERA, 18.0 IP, 9 H, 3 ER, 3 BB, 22 K

Oakes was a 9th round pick by the Astros in the 2025 draft and he has been great so far, turning in a dominant month of May. In May the right-hander posted a 1.50 ERA over four outings while striking out 22 batters in 18 innings. He also walked just 3 batters and allowed just 9 hits.
