On Saturday, the Florida Complex League Astros opened their season, and subsequently finalized their roster to start the year. Below is a breakdown of the roster and players to watch.
2024 DRAFTEES:
There is only one prospect from the 2024 draft on the FCL roster and that is outfielder Ethan Wagner. Wagner was drafted by the Astros in the 17th round of the 2024 draft out of high school and signed for $150,000. He played with FCL last year and had a .707 OPS with 5 doubles, 4 home runs and 21 runs batted in over 41 games. With a good start, he could find himself in Fayetteville quickly.
2025 DRAFTEES:
The 2025 draft is more represented on this roster. Highlighting the draft is 7th rounder, Jase Mitchell, who signed for $797,500. He is a catcher with some big time power from the left side. Definitely one to watch. After him there is 12th rounder Elijah Farley who is a left-handed hitting outfielder who has elite speed on the bases and in the outfield. Next up is 17th rounder Grayson Saunier, a pitcher from University of Texas. Saunier pitched in 12 games posting a 3.86 ERA over 25.2 innings for UT before the draft.
In the 18th round the Astros selected shortstop Landon Arroyos, also out of high school, and he signed for $272,500. Arroyos has great bat control and very good speed with the ability to stick at shortstop. Also joining these draftees are two prospects who were signed out of high school as undrafted free agents, catcher August Cuneo and pitcher Ryan Petrovitch.
INTERNATIONAL PROSPECTS:
The international side has brought some very intriguing prospects. Anderson Areinamo is a small, undersized infielder but he can do some damage with the bat. Last year in the DSL he had 10 doubles, 6 home runs, 30 runs batted in and 18 stolen bases in 51 games. He was named a DSL All-Star. Shortstop Juan Rojas is another intriguing infielder. Last year in the DSL he .286 with a .831 OPS and more walks than strikeouts in 50 games.
In the outfield is prospect Ariel Lebron. Lebron performed well in the DSL last year hitting .299 with 16 stolen bases over 28 games. He is joined by Luis Rives who got a nice bonus to sign with the Astros and despite repeating in the FCL, he saw some nice improvements from 2024 to 2025. Luis De Leon is on the roster and is a young catcher who had a .784 OPS last year in the DSL.
The most intriguing arm is probably right-hander Adrian Ardines. Ardines was dominant in the DSL last year posting a 1.91 ERA with 56 K in 42.1 innings. 19-year-old Angel Peralta is another pitching prospect who had some good numbers in the DSL last year as he posted a 3.74 ERA over 45.2 innings. There is also a very young pitcher, 18-year-old Ismael Obregon, who makes his stateside debut after striking out 41 in 39.1 innings in 2025.
Two other pitchers who are no longer teenagers, but still intriguing, are Juan Mieses and Juan Fraide. Mieses last year had a 3.22 ERA with 43 K in 36.1 innings. Fraide pitched between the DSL and FCL last year and had a 3.00 ERA over 30 innings.
OVERALL THOUGHTS:
The roster has a nice blend of drafted talent and international prospects. The team is young but filled with some high upside players. It will be fun to see how they progress throughout the season.
