Astros Minor League Recap: August 17th

AAA: Sugar Land Space Cowboys (57-60) won 4-2 (BOX SCORE)

Gordon started for Sugar Land and went 4 innings allowing 1 run. The offense got on the board in the 6th when Davidson connected on a 2 run HR. Salt Lake got an unearned run off Looney in the 7th to tie it up. In the 8th inning, Diaz and Matthews connected on back to back homers to give Sugar Land the lead. Hernandez tossed a scoreless 9th as he closed out the 4-2 win.

Note: Matthews has a .865 OPS in Triple-A.


AA: Corpus Christi Hooks (39-74) lost 17-9 (BOX SCORE)

The Hooks got on the board in the first on a Clarke 2 run HR. They got a run in the second inning on a fielder’s choice and then 2 runs in the 3rd on a Sacco 2 run double. The offense scored again in the 4th on a Guillemette RBI groundout. Swanson got the start and went 4 innings allowing 6 runs. The pen really struggled allowing 6 runs in the 5th and 4 runs in the 6th as the Sod Poodles took a big lead. The offense got 3 runs back in the 7th on a Garcia sac fly and Cole 2 run double but the Sod Poodles scored a couple more as the Hooks fell 17-9.

Note: Cole has a .868 OPS this season.


A+: Asheville Tourists (48-64) won 5-3 (BOX SCORE)

Howard started for Asheville and was solid allowing 1 run over 4 innings while striking out 3. The offense got on the board in the 3rd on a Lytle RBI single and Villarroel RBI groundout. In the 4th, Brutcher added an RBI double. Asheville got 2 more in the 8th inning on a Whitaker 2 run HR. Pinto went the final 4 innings allowing 1 run as Asheville won 5-3.

Note: Lytle is hitting .290 this season.

  • Norbis Diaz, RHP: 1.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 0 K (WIN)
  • Jean Pinto, RHP: 4.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 5 K (SAVE)

A: Fayetteville Woodpeckers (61-52) lost 4-3 (BOX SCORE)

Gonzalez got the start and went 4 innings allowing 1 run while striking out 6. The offense got on the board in the 3rd inning on a wild pitch. The Mudcats took the lead in the 7th inning scoring 3 unearned runs on Landeta. In the 9th, the Woodpeckers rallied getting a run on a Forrester RBI groundout and Huezo RBI single but that was it as the comeback fell short and the Woodpeckers fell 4-3.

Note: Huezo is hitting .359 in Single-A.
