The Houston Astros are reportedly the favorites to sign Dominican Republic pitcher Omar Damian in 2025, per Francys Romero of Béisbol FR. The 2024 signing period will open Jan. 15, 2025, when the Astros are expected to complete the signing of many international players, including Damian.
Here is a video of Damian on the mound.
Damian, who is only 16-years-old, is considered one of the most legitimate “dark horses” in the international class according to Francys Romero. Damian was part of the Dominican Republic team at the U-18 World Cup Qualifier in August of 2024. While the Astros system has taken a hit recently, it appears they are loading up on the international side including a potential deal with the #3 rated international prospect, Kevin Alvarez.
Astros ink OF Jose Gonzalez
Prior to this signing, the Astros were reportedly in agreement with outfielder Jose Gonzalez on a minor league deal. Gonzalez played collegiate ball at Texas State for 3 years and spent 2024 in the Pioneer League where he hit .370 with 19 home runs and 84 runs batted in. Gonzalez was born in Spring, TX.
