Last week, Major League Baseball’s signing period opened for 2025. The Astros were quite busy, inking 20 international free agents in the process. The Astros had a bonus pool of $5,646,200 for this international signing period.
The top get for the Astros this signing period was outfielder Kevin Alvarez, a 17-year-old from Cuba. Alvarez was ranked as the 7th best prospect this signing period and according to Francys Romero, Alvarez was seen as the most complete hitter of the group. MLB Pipeline noted that Alvarez has an advanced left-handed swing and Astros Senior Scouting Advisor, Charlie Gonzalez, noted that Alvarez has above-average tools across the board.
Another top player they signed was Venezuelan center fielder Anthony Millan. He has plus speed and arm strength and is a quick burst athlete at a premium position, according to Baseball America. Millan is 5’10” and while he doesn’t project for much power right now, he has been praised for his aggressiveness at the plate.
The Astros also signed a dark horse candidate in right-hander Omar Damian from the Dominican Republic. Damian is only 16 years old and is already 6’2″ with a fastball up to 90 MPH. He has an advanced changeup and a a solid curveball. Another pitcher they signed was Juan Fraide who has a fastball that touches 95 MPH according to Baseball America.
