Houston Astros MiLB Players Of The Month: June
Let’s take a look at the best performances in the Astros system in June.
*Just a note, these are my picks for the month* Previous POTM: May
AAA: Sugar Land Skeeters
HITTER: Jake Meyers, OF
- June Stats: 24 G, .337 BA/.398 OBP/.673 SLG, 6 2B, 9 HR, 17 RBI, 2 SB, 153 wRC+
Meyers was a 13th round pick in the 2017 draft. He had a solid May hitting .325 but he followed that up with a dominant June where he hit .337 with 9 HR. Already an elite defensive player in the outfield, the bat is now looking legit. Overall he has a 143 wRC+ this season after posting a 153 wRC+ in June.
PITCHER: J.P. France, RHP
- June Stats: 5 G, 3.92 ERA, 20.2 IP, 18 H, 9 ER, 12 BB, 30 SO
France started the month in AA but was promoted to AAA about half way through. There weren’t a lot of bright spots on the pitching side but France was solid striking out 30 batters in 20.2 innings. He had a 3.92 ERA but a 3.16 FIP. Overall this season he has 63 K in 41.1 innings.
AA: Corpus Christi Hooks
HITTER: Norel Gonzalez, OF/1B
- June Stats: 22 G, .359 BA/.457 OBP/.615 SLG, 8 2B, 4 HR, 22 RBI, 187 wRC+
Korey Lee had a very good month too but Gonzalez was just a bit better. He slashed .359/.457/.615 in 22 games with a 187 wRC+. Even more impressive was his 14.1 BB% and 16.3 K%. Overall this year he has a 153 wRC+ with 10 2B, 9 HR, 33 RBI.
PITCHER: Hunter Brown, RHP
- June Stats: 5 G, 3.52 ERA, 23.0 IP, 11 H, 9 ER, 15 BB, 38 SO
After a rough start to the season in May, Brown showed why he is a highly ranked prospect striking out 38 in just 23 innings in June. He held opponents to just a .145 BAA. He also had a 3.32 FIP in May and a 41.3 K%.
A+: Asheville Tourists
HITTER: Joe Perez, OF
- June Stats: 22 G, .352 BA/.412 OBP/.705 SLG, 10 2B, 7 HR, 20 RBI, 196 wRC+
Perez started the season in Fayetteville and quickly earned a promotion to Asheville. In June he crushed the ball posting a 196 wRC+ and a 1.117 OPS with 17 XBH in 22 games. He has since been promoted to AA. A great season so far for the former 2nd round pick.
PITCHER: Michael Horrell, RHP
- June Stats: 7 G, 1.74 ERA, 10.1 IP, 8 H, 2 ER, 4 BB, 13 K
Asheville is a tough place to pitch and the Tourists staff has a 6.38 ERA. But Horrell had a solid month in relief posting a 1.74 ERA with 13 K in 10.1 innings. Nice month for the 30th rounder in 2019.
A: Fayetteville Woodpeckers
HITTER: J.C. Correa, IF
- June Stats: 20 G, .321 BA/.391 OBP/.436 SLG, 6 2B, 1 HR, 10 RBI, 2 SB. 135 wRC+
Correa had a nice month at the plate in June hitting .321 with 7 BB/6 K in 20 games. The extra base hits weren’t a ton, but he found a way to get on base and managed to drive in 10 runs while posting a 135 wRC+.
PITCHER: Brayan De Paula, LHP
- June Stats: 4 G, 0.73 ERA, 12.1 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 24 K, .119 BAA
Another guy who has been promoted to a new level, De Paula had a nice June posting a 2.95 ERA with 22 K in 21.1 innings. He really cut down on the walks too walking just 4 in June after walking 16 in May.
