Houston Astros MiLB Players Of The Month: May

Let’s take a look at the best performances in the Astros system in May.

*Just a note, these are my picks for the month*

AAA: Sugar Land Skeeters

HITTER: Jose Siri, OF

  • May Stats: 20 G, .354 BA/.376 OBP/.634 SLG, 8 2B, 5 HR, 31 RBI, 4 SB

Siri was signed by the Astros as a minor league free agent, and so far it is looking like a great deal. While some of the numbers may not be sustainable, he had an unbelievable start to this season hitting .354 with 31 RBI in just 20 games. There were a lot of good performances (Dawson, De La Cruz, Meyers, Papierski) but Siri’s run production may it hard to not choose him.

PITCHER: Brett Conine, RHP

  • May Stats: 4 G, 0.90 ERA, 19.0 IP, 11 H, 2 ER, 7 BB, 16 SO

Following a great 2019 season which saw him make it to AA, Conine was assigned to AAA for the 2021 season. He has made the most of it so far posting a 0.90 ERA in four games, which he is 4-0 in. He has allowed just 11 hits in 19 innings and is looking like someone who might be able to help the Astros in 2021 or 2022.

AA: Corpus Christi Hooks

HITTER: Marty Costes, OF

  • May Stats: 18 G, .365 BA/.438 OBP/.476 SLG, 4 2B, 1 HR, 9 RBI, 3 SB, 161 wRC+

Costes is off to a great start in his first taste of AA baseball. In the month of May he hit .365 with a .438 OBP leading the way for the Hooks offense, who overall struggled as a group. Costes is a former 22nd round pick from the 2018 draft.

PITCHER: Jonathan Bermudez, LHP

  • May Stats: 5 G, 2.66 ERA/1.59 FIP, 23.2 IP, 19 H, 7 ER, 3 BB, 39 SO

Bermudez was a 23rd round pick in the 2018 draft, and has gotten off to a phenomenal start this season. He has a 2.66 ERA, but a 1.59 FIP. He has posted a 42.9 K% and a 39.6 K-BB% this season. Truly a dominant month for this left hander.

A+: Asheville Tourists

HITTER: Alex McKenna, OF

  • May Stats: 21 G, .305 BA/.403 OBP/.549 SLG, 6 2B, 3B, 4 HR, 17 RBI, 3 SB, 167 wRC+

McKenna was drafted in the 4th round in 2018 and looked like a steal following the draft. He struggled some in 2019 due to injuries and the rehab, but he looks back in 2021 and the power has came back. Through 21 games in May he hit .305 with 11 XBH and a 167 wRC+. Great start for McKenna.

PITCHER: Jimmy Endersby, RHP

  • May Stats: 5 G, 3.92 ERA/2.92 FIP, 20.2 IP, 16 H, 9 ER, 7 BB, 31 K, 37.3 K%

Endersby was signed as an undrafted free agent following the 2020 draft, but he had the choice of pretty much any team due to the shortened draft. While the ERA sits at 3.92, his FIP is 2.92 and he has struck out 31 in 20.2 innings so far this season. Also boasted a very nice 37.3 K% in May.

A: Fayetteville Woodpeckers

HITTER: Matthew Barefoot, OF

  • May Stats: 16 G, .344 BA/.392 OBP/.625 SLG, 4 2B, 3B, 4 HR, 17 RBI, 10 SB. 168 wRC+

Barefoot was the Astros 5th round pick in 2018. He got off to a hot start with the Woodpeckers posting a 1.017 OPS in 16 games before being promoted to Asheville. Overall, he is sitting at 7 HR, 21 RBI and a 1.001 OPS in 23 games between A and A+. Great start to the season for Barefoot.

PITCHER: Jaime Melendez, RHP

  • May Stats: 4 G, 0.73 ERA, 12.1 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 24 K, .119 BAA

Melendez has came out of nowhere but put up some incredible numbers in May. He pitched in 4 games and in just 12.1 innings, he struck out 24 and allowed just 5 hits. He is only 5-8, 190 lbs, but the numbers are making him one to watch moving forward this season.
