Astros Minor League Recap: April 7th, 2017

Another night of minor league play is in the books with all four minor league teams in action. See how the teams and prospects performed last night.

AAA: Fresno Grizzlies (1-1) won 6-1 (BOX SCORE)

Rodgers made his first start of the season and picked up where he left off last season. He went 6 innings allowing just 1 run with 4 strikeouts. Fresno got their scoring started in the 3rd thanks to an error by left fielder Arcia allowing Stassi to score and a wild pitch allowing Fisher to score. White and Brignac both added RBI singles to extend the lead to 4-0. In the bottom of the 4th, Fisher connected on his 2nd HR of the season, a 2 run shot to right field. The bullpen combination of Guduan, Jankowski, and Hoyt closed out the game all tossing scoreless innings.

AA: Corpus Christi Hooks (1-1) lost 6-1 (BOX SCORE)

Rough night for the Corpus offense. Another Tar Heel, Kent Emanuel, got the start last night. While he struck out five over 4 innings of work, he also allowed 4 runs. The Hooks were shutout until the 8th inning when Hyde came through with an RBI single. Singleton got his first hit back in Double-A with a double in the 7th. Not much else was noteworthy in this game.

A+: Buies Creek Astros (2-0) won 5-3 (BOX SCORE)

Buies Creek picks up another win. Winkelman got the start and was dominant. He struck out 11 over 5.2 scoreless innings allowing just 1 hit and 1 walk. The Astros got on the board in the 3rd inning with Sewald scoring on a wild pitch. Martin would add to the lead with a sacrifice fly in the 5th making it 2-0. J. Ferrell came on in relief of Winkelman but, unfortunately, gave up 3 runs in the 8th inning. The Astros would respond though with McCall coming through with a clutch 2 out, 2 run triple in the 8th to give the Astros the lead once again. Porter added an RBI single for an insurance run. Thome pitched a scoreless 9th with 2 strikeouts to pick up the save.

A: Quad Cities River Bandits (1-1) lost 1-0 (BOX SCORE)

Carson LaRue, the Astros 14th round pick in 2016, made his season debut last night and pitched well tossing five scoreless innings for the River Bandits. Hunt relieved him and while he didn’t pitch bad, he allowed 1 run over 3 innings. Unfortunately, it was the only run scored in the game as the River Bandits were held to just five hits (four singles). Wrenn and Robinson both collected two hits.

Today’s starters according to MiLB.com:

FRE: Brian Holmes (-.– ERA)

CC: Dean Deetz (-.– ERA)
