Houston Astros Minor League Recap: September 3rd

Another night of Astros minor league play is in the books. See how the prospects performed last night.

AAA: Fresno Grizzlies (71-70) won 10-5 (BOX SCORE)

Nice win for Fresno. The Grizzlies scored first getting a sac fly from Worth in the 1st inning. In the 2nd inning, Mayfield came through with an RBI single to give them a 2-0 lead. After Sacramento tied it at 2, Fresno responded with 2 more runs in the 3rd on a Singleton 2 run double. Singleton added a sac fly in the 5th to extend the lead to 5-2. Sacramento would battle back and tie the game at 5 in the 7th inning. Fresno responded in a big way getting 5 runs in the 8th on a Kemmer grand slam and a Singleton RBI double. Chapman pitched the final 2.1 innings to close it out.

AA: Corpus Christi Hooks (83-55) won 7-1 (BOX SCORE)

Corpus keeps on rolling. Deetz made his second start in Double-A and was just as dominant as he was a week ago. He tossed 6 shutout innings allowing just 1 hit with 8 strikeouts. The Hooks got on the board early with a Ferguson solo HR in the 1st inning. Corpus added 3 more runs in the 4th on a Davis RBI double, Gregor RBI groundout, and a Tanielu RBI single. Stubbs continued his strong night at the plate with an RBI double in the 5th inning. Corpus added two more runs in the 7th on a Davis 2 run double. Smith tossed the final 3 innings allowing just 1 run to pick up the save.

  • Dean Deetz, RHP: 6.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 8 K (WIN)
  • Kyle Smith, RHP: 3.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 K (SAVE)

A+: Lancaster Jethawks (76-62) won 7-6 (BOX SCORE)

This game almost got away but Lancaster was able to hold on. The Jethawks jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when Straw singled, stole second, and eventually scored on a Muniz groundout. Wik added an RBI groundout in the 4th to time the game at 2. Lancaster took a big lead in the 7th scoring 5 times on a Sewald RBI walk, Straw steal of home, Muniz RBI triple, Ritchie RBI single and another run scoring on a wild pitch. Inland Empire made it close scoring twice in the 8th and 9th but Thome was able to get the last two outs and pick up the save.

A: Quad Cities River Bandits (60-77) lost 5-0 (BOX SCORE)

Another rough night for the Quad Cities offense. On the night they managed just 3 hits, all singles, and 2 walks. Quiala got the start and allowed 3 runs over 6 innings. Kessay relieved him and tossed 2 innings allowing 2 unearned runs.

A-: Tri-City ValleyCats (37-37) lost 5-4 (BOX SCORE)
