Houston Astros Minor League Recap: July 2nd

Another night of Astros minor league play is in the books. See how the prospects performed last night.

AAA: Fresno Grizzlies (41-39) won 7-1 (BOX SCORE)

Tommy Shirley got the start for Fresno and had one of his better outings of the season tossing 6.2 scoreless innings giving up just 5 hits. Fresno got on the board in the 3rd inning with a solo HR from Stassi, his 4th of the season. In the 4th inning Fresno added another run on a Moran RBI single. Fresno added two more runs in the 6th with one run scoring on an error and one runs scoring on a wild pitch. The Grizzlies would end up scoring 3 more in the 8th inning with a 2 run double from Stassi and an RBI single from Kemp. Gustave tossed a scoreless 9th to seal it.

AA: Corpus Christi Hooks (52-27) won 6-3 (BOX SCORE)

Corpus gets back in the win column. Grills got the start and went 7 innings allowing 3 earned runs. Corpus got their offense going in the 3rd inning with 4 runs thanks to a sac fly from McDonald, RBI double from Vasquez, and a 2 run single from Tanielu. Corpus added another 2 runs with a 2 run HR from Pena in the 8th inning. West closed out the game with two scoreless innings to pick up the save.

  • Evan Grills, LHP: 7.0 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 3 K
  • Aaron West, RHP: 2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 2 K

A+: Lancaster Jethawks (40-39) lost 3-1 (BOX SCORE)

All the scoring came in the first inning. Jethawks opened an early lead with a Laureano RBI groundout scoring Sewald. Armenteros got the start for Lancaster and gave up 3 runs in the first inning, the only runs he would allow over his five innings of work. Lancaster only managed 3 hits on the night and was unable to get anything else going.

A: Quad Cities River Bandits (36-43) lost 7-1 (BOX SCORE)

Offense was silent last night for QC. Perez got the start and while he gave up 3 runs over 5 innings of work, all three came in the first inning. He didn’t allow a hit in his final four innings. The offense didn’t get going until the 6th inning when Duarte hit an RBI single, the only run they would score.

A-: Tri-City ValleyCats (7-9) lost 5-1 (BOX SCORE)

Tri-City struggled to get the offense going. Sandoval got the start and went the first three inning allowing just 1 run. Smith relieved him and gave up 4 runs in his 0.2 innings of work. Brey tossed 3.1 scoreless innings in relief with 4 strikeouts. Tri-City was only able to get on the board once with a Wrenn RBI single in the 8th inning.

ROOKIE: Greeneville Astros (4-6) won 6-2 (BOX SCORE)

ROOKIE: GCL Astros (2-6) lost 12-4 (BOX SCORE)
