Houston Astros Minor League Recap: April 16th

All four teams in action and it was a split for the Astros minor league system. See how the prospects performed last night.

AAA: Fresno Grizzlies (4-4) lost 7-5 (BOX SCORE)

This was a tough loss for Fresno, losing in 11 innings. Las Vegas got off to a good start scoring 4 runs off of Wojciechowski in the first 4 innings. Fresno went into the bottom of the 9th down 5-1 and that’s where the rally started. Andrew Aplin had an RBI single, Tony Kemp had an RBI single, and Matt Duffy had a two run single to tie the game. Hoyt pitched the top of the 11th and struggled finding the strike zone walking 4 batters and giving up 2 runs. Unfortunately Fresno couldn’t scratch across any more runs and ended up losing the game.

AA: Corpus Christi Hooks (6-3) won 5-4 (BOX SCORE)

One of the top pitching prospects, Francis Martes, was on the mound last night for Corpus. He allowed 3 runs in the first inning but was able to settle down a bit after that. He ended up striking out 8 hitters in just 4 innings. Corpus responded with runs in the 4th, 5th, and 6th innings. Bregman had another good game with two hits and 2 RBI. He is now hitting .361 on the season. Jack Mayfield had another hit and he is 10-for-20 so far. The Corpus bullpen of Guduan and McCurry was able to come in and shut the door.

A+: Lancaster Jethawks (4-3) won 3-2 (BOX SCORE)

Back to back 1-run wins are not very common in the California League but the Jethawks did it. Solid starting pitching from Akeem Bostick who went 4.2 IP and allowed 0 earned runs. Lancaster scored all three of their runs with RBIs from Ramon Laureano and Marc Wik. Laureno, Wik, and Ferguson all collected two hits and the Lancaster bullpen was able to limit High Desert to just two runs.

A: Quad Cities River Bandits (2-8) lost 5-4 (BOX SCORE)

Another tough loss for Quad Cities as they fall to 2-8 on the season. Kane County scored all five runs third inning off of starter Sebastian Kessay. QC tried to mount a comeback with RBIs from Cameron, Duarte, and Hermelyn but the comeback effort fell short. Duarte is off to a good start this season hitting .370 in 10 games. Eight of the nine starters had a hit today so that is a good sign moving forward. Deemes was solid once again in relief.

Today’s starters according to MiLB.com:

FRE: Brady Rodgers (3.60 ERA)

CC: Brian Holmes (4.91 ERA)

LAN: Joshua James (2.45 ERA)

QC: Kevin McCanna (0.00 ERA)
