Overview:
Potter was selected by the Astros in the fifth round of the 2025 MLB Draft after spending two years at the junior college level and one season at Wichita State. Despite pitching primarily out of the bullpen in college, the Astros have transitioned the right-hander into a starting role. Potter’s best weapon is a big fastball that sits 95-96 mph and can reach 100. He also features a solid curveball, though command was the biggest question mark coming into pro ball. His arsenal will likely continue to evolve as the Astros develop him as a starter and work to expand his pitch mix. So far, the transition has gone extremely well. Potter has posted a 2.11 ERA with 70 strikeouts over 59.2 innings this season. His combination of premium velocity and success as a starter has made him one of the more intriguing pitching prospects in the Astros’ system.
Baseball America had the following to say about Potter: “Potter is a tall, athletic righthander with an up-tempo operation and a ton of arm speed. Potter throws two pitches in a four-seam fastball and slider. His fastball sits 95-97 mph and touches 100 with plus ride and heavy cut. Potter’s slider sits 83-85 mph with baby sweeper shape, getting around seven inches of sweep and around an inch of drop. Potter looks like a relief-only prospect with two pitches and below-average command.”
