Houston Astros Prospect Profile: Keon Johnson
Keon Johnson – SS
HT/WT: 6’2”/203 | Bat/Throw: R/R | School: First Presbyterian (GA) | DOB: 03/07/08
Overview:
The Astros dipped into the high school talent with the third pick taking shortstop Keon Johnson out of Georgia. Johnson has solid tools across the board with his hit tool and his arm the best of the bunch. Johnson has really good bat speed and strength and the skills to stick at shortstop in professional baseball. He may not have a standout tool, but he also doesn’t have any weaknesses in his game.
Baseball America said the following about Johnson: “Johnson pairs a savvy batting eye with a patient offensive approach and contact skills that should allow him to hit for average, get on base and flash solid power at physical maturity. He has a simple righthanded swing with a slight hitch and barrel tip in his load, and a quiet lower half that doesn’t feature a leg kick or toe tap timing mechanism. He’s a reliable defender with solid instincts and soft hands. Johnson might not be the flashiest defender, but he’s the sort of player who will convert all the routine plays you expect him to with an above-average arm that is more than enough for the left side of the infield.”
