The Houston Astros invited some very intriguing prospects as non-roster invitees to Spring Training. Today, the Astros reassigned prospects two of those prospect, Walker Janek and Lucas Spence, to minor league camp. Just keep in mind, these moves are procedural and bound to happen before the season starts.
Janek, the Astros first round pick in 2024, has put together a strong spring. The 23-year-old catcher played in seven games and went 5-for-11 with 2 doubles, a home run, 4 runs batted in and 4 stolen bases. This is very encouraging and follows up on a strong Arizona Fall League too. He should start the year in Double-A.
Spence was an undrafted free agent following the 2024 draft and had a breakout 2025 season. Spence also played in seven games going 3-for-17 with a double, an RBI and a stolen bases. Spence finished 2025 in Double-A but will most likely start back in Corpus Christi this season.
