Last week, Major League Baseball’s signing period opened for 2026. The Astros were busy, inking 8 international free agents in the process. The Astros had a bonus pool of $5,440,000 for this international signing period.
The top get for the Astros this signing period was shortstop Albert Fermin ($2.3 million) a 16-year-old from the Dominican Republic. Fermin was ranked as the 19th best prospect this signing period and according to MLB Pipeline. Fermin is listed at 6’3″ with a ton of projectability in his frame. He is a switch-hitter with solid grades across the board, with his arm coming in at a 60 grade.
Another top player they signed was Dominican shortstop Randy Arias ($1.4 million). Arias is a plus defender at shortstop and is a solid hitter who has the ability to hit line drives all over the field. Arias is 5’11” and while he doesn’t project for much power right now, he has been praised for doing damage when he has the pitches to do so.
A couple other promising sings were outfielder Imanol Feriz ($700k) who is a 6-foot, left-handed hitting center fielder with plus speed and shortstop Sebastian Mendez who has a strong left-handed bat with the ability to drive the ball.
