On Wednesday, Major League Baseball held the annual Rule 5 Draft, which allows teams to select players from other team’s roster, with some exceptions. More can be found here on the Rule 5 Draft. The Astros came away with three players, which are detailed below.
Roddery Munoz, RHP
In the major league portion of the Rule 5 Draft, the Astros selected right-hander Roddery Munoz from the Reds. Munoz has bounced around a few different organizations but most recently pitched for the Cardinals Triple-A affiliate in 2025 where he had a 3.28 ERA with 76 K in 57.2 innings. He pitched in nine games at the major league level in 2025 and averaged around 96 MPH.
Trey McLoughlin, RHP
In the minor league phase, the Astros selected right-hander Trey McLoughlin from the Mets. The 26-year-old pitched in Double-A in 2025 and had a 3.91 ERA with 26 K in 23 innings in relief. He’s another relief option the Astros can through in Corpus Christi or Sugar Land to help beef up the pen.
Edwin Sanchez, OF
The last selection by the Astros was outfielder Edwin Sanchez out of the Dodgers system. The 21-year-old has played in the Dodgers system for four years but hasn’t made it out of the DSL despite some encouraging numbers, including an OPS north of .900 the last two years. Not sure the plan for him in 2026, but he’s always posted strong walkout and strikeout rates too.
Astros prospect Abel Mercedes was selected by the Athletics and is no longer in the organization.
