Astros Minor League Players of the Month: August

Let’s take a look at the best performances in the Astros system in August.

AAA: Sugar Land Space Cowboys

HITTER: Shay Whitcomb, INF

  • August Stats: 20 G, .282 BA/.387 OBP/.436 SLG, 6 2B, 2 HR, 12 RBI, 4 SB

Whitcomb has been solid all season long in Triple-A and had another solid month of August. In 20 games, the infielder hit .282 with 6 doubles, 2 home runs and 4 stolen bases. Overall this year Whitcomb has 21 doubles, 22 home runs and a .851 OPS in 108 games in Triple-A.

PITCHER: Tyler Ivey, RHP

  • August Stats: 5 G, 2.31 ERA, 23.1 IP, 16 H, 6 ER, 13 BB, 19 SO

Ivey has been a reclamation project this year after not pitching since 2022. He has had some up and downs but August was a good month for him. In five games the right-hander had a 2.31 ERA over 23.1 innings allowing just 16 hits. He held opponents to just a .226 batting average against.


AA: Corpus Christi Hooks

HITTER: Zach Cole, OF

  • August Stats: 23 G, .348 BA/.412 OBP/.641 SLG, 7 2B, 4 3B, 4 HR, 16 RBI, 2 SB

Cole had some struggles earlier in the year but when he gets hot, he hits as well as anyone in the system. In 23 games in August, split between Double-A and Triple-A, Cole hit .348 with 7 doubles, 4 triples, 4 home runs and 16 runs batted in. Overall he has 18 home runs, 15 stolen bases and a .903 OPS in 89 games this season.

PITCHER: Alonzo Tredwell, RHP

  • August Stats: 5 G, 3.78 ERA, 16.2 IP, 16 H, 7 ER, 8 BB, 27 SO

After a rough 2024 season with some injuries, Tredwell has put together a great season in 2025. In August he pitched in six games and posted a 3.92 ERA with 30 strikeouts over 20.2 innings. Overall he has a career high 109 strikeouts over 94 innings with a 3.83 ERA between High-A and Double-A.


A+: Asheville Tourists

HITTER: Alejandro Nunez, INF

  • August Stats: 23 G, .295 BA/.330 OBP/.443 SLG, 2 2B, 3B, 3 HR, 11 RBI, 7 SB

Nunez started out the season hot and after a little lull, he was back to swinging it well in August. In 23 games, the 20-year-old hit .295 with 2 doubles, a triple, 3 home runs and 7 stolen bases. He has quietly had a solid season hitting .269 with 19 doubles, 8 home runs and 22 stolen bases.

PITCHER: Jean Pinto, RHP

  • August Stats: 4 G, 1.08 ERA, 16.2 IP, 13 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 18 K

Pinto had probably the best month of his career in August. The right-hander posted a 1.08 ERA over 16.2 innings while striking out 18 batters. Overall he has a 4.96 ERA with 42 strikeouts over 52.2 innings for Asheville.


A: Fayetteville Woodpeckers

HITTER: Ethan Frey, OF

  • August Stats: 22 G, .284 BA/.406 OBP/.383 SLG, 5 2B, HR, 15 RBI, 6 SB

Frey was the Astros 3rd round pick in 2025 and came out of the gates hot. In 22 games in August, the 21-year-old hit .284 with a really nice .406 on base percentage. He also added 5 doubles, a homer and drew 18 walks.

PITCHER: Parker Smith, RHP

  • August Stats: 6 G, 2.05 ERA, 30.2 IP, 24 H, 7 ER, 6 BB, 32 K

Smith was the Astros 4th rounder in 2024 and was dominant in August. He pitched in six games and posted a 2.05 ERA with 6 walks to 32 strikeouts in 30.2 innings. Overall he has a 2.86 ERA with 52 strikeouts in 56.2 innings for Fayetteville this season.
