On Thursday, MLB announced the Rookie-level All-Stars, which included standouts from both the Florida Complex League, home of the Astros’ rookie affiliate, and the Dominican Summer League, where the Astros also field a rookie level team.

Two Astros prospects were recognized as Florida Complex League All-Stars.

Javier Perez, RHP

Not only was Perez named an All-Star, but he was also honored as the Florida Complex League Pitcher of the Year. The right-hander dominated in the FCL, posting a 1.69 ERA with just 8 walks and 48 strikeouts across 42.2 innings. Perez, a 21-year-old from Mexico, is in his second season with the Astros organization. He features a low-90s fastball complemented by a changeup, cutter, and curveball. What truly sets him apart is his elite command and he has carried that with him to Fayetteville as well, where he has walked only 2 batters in 20 innings.

Luis Aguilar, RHP

Aguilar was the other Astros prospect named to the FCL All-Star team, and he was equally impressive. The 21-year-old right-hander from Panama posted a 2.05 ERA across 44 innings, striking out 49 while walking just 14 and holding opponents to a .180 batting average. While Aguilar doesn’t feature overpowering velocity, his fastball sits around 90 mph, he has stood out for his command and pitchability, mixing in a slider, curveball, and changeup to keep hitters off balance.

One Astros prospect was recognized as a Dominican Summer League All-Star.

Adrian Ardines, RHP

Ardines turned in a tremendous season in the Dominican Summer League, putting up eye-catching numbers on the mound. The 18-year-old right-hander struck out 56 batters in 42.1 innings while issuing just 7 walks, good for a 1.5 BB/9 and a stellar 0.921 WHIP. Ardines works with a low-90s fastball and a strong changeup, but what stood out most this year was his advanced command for his age. He’s expected to make the jump to the Florida Complex League next season, where he’ll look to build on his success.
