Jase Mitchell has long dreamed of playing professional baseball. The Houston Astros made that a reality Monday, selecting him in the seventh round of the 2025 MLB Draft.
“It was a such a surreal moment,” Mitchell said. “Something that I’ve dreamed of since I was a kind and I am so blessed to have this opportunity.”
Mitchell will pass on his commitment to Kentucky to sign with the Astros in the coming days.
“I made the decision [to pass on college committment] because I have a lot of confidence in the Astros player development and my goal is to get to the big league as quick as possible and feel this was the route that would be best suited for that goal,” Mitchell said.
Mitchell first made contact with the Astros’ brass last winter, building a relationship with Astros hitting coordinator, Dan Hennigan, through his company Brain and Barrel.
“I started hitting with him and as it got closer to the draft, their interest continued to grow so I always knew they were going to be in the mix,” Mitchell said.
Mitchell is a 6-foot-3, 205-pound catcher from Cape Henlopen High School in Delaware. Mitchell was the number one ranked player in the state of Delaware, according to Perfect Game, and also took home Gatorade Player of the Year for the state hitting .500 with 5 home runs and 29 runs batted in.
Mitchell was seen as one of the best power hitting catchers in the draft with MLB Pipeline noting he has plus raw power and a plus arm behind the plate.
“I’m a left handed hitting catcher with a great mix of power and hit with very little swing and missing in my game,” Mitchell said. “I’m a student of the game and have a very high baseball IQ and always want to learn and study this game.”
Mitchell will most likely head to the Florida Complex this week where he will start to work with Astros coaches and player development. While he is only 18-years-old, the upside is huge for the young catcher.
