Astros Draft: Day 2 Prospects To Watch

Aidan Teel, Virginia

I wanted to put a list together of some college prospects I like and some guys I think the Astros could target on day two of the 2025 draft. While information is limited on them, it is still fun to see how they performed in college. I will try to give names that aren’t very well known.

HITTERS:

Kade Snell, OF, Alabama

Snell has put up some really intriguing numbers in his college career. Ranked the #224 prospect by MLB Pipeline, Snell has elite bat to ball skills and accumulated a ridiculous 38 walk to 18 strikeout ratio in 58 games in 2025. He also added 10 homers. Snell had good numbers in the Cape Cod League too hitting .342 with wood bats in 21 games.

Jake McCutcheon, OF, Missouri State

McCutcheon had a breakout year for Missouri State in 2025 hitting .358 with 15 home runs and 10 stolen bases in 55 games. He also has put up some good numbers with wood bats hitting a combined .308 in 81 games with wood bats. MLB noted he has plus swing decisions and exit velocities and could be a good fit for a data-driven team.

Aidan Teel, OF, Virginia

Teel finally got a chance to be a full time player as a junior and made the most of it hitting .317 with 31 walks to 30 strikeouts. While he doesn’t have a ton of power, he made up for it with his contact ability and defense in center field. He also had a monster summer in 2024 hitting .387 with 11 home runs in the NorthWoods League.

Core Jackson, SS, Utah

While Utah isn’t known for producing much talent to the MLB, Jackson could change that. The lefty hitting shortstop had a big 2025 season where he slashed .364/.445./641 with 12 home runs and 20 stolen bases. The Canada native could be a spark plug in a minor league system following the draft.

Jake Munroe, 3B, Louisville

Munroe has been a standout with the bat over the last couple of years. He played in the NorthWoods League in 2024 and hit .313 with a 1.025 OPS in 23 games, including 6 home runs. In 2025 for Louisville, Munroe hit .346 with 13 home runs and 61 runs batted in over 66 games.

Austin Hawke, 2B, Wake Forest

Hawke is a smaller in stature second baseman that played at Wake Forest the last two seasons after being at UNC his freshman year. He had a good year in 2025 hitting .303 with 34 BB/34 SO in 43 games for Wake Forest. This also included 10 home runs and 5 stolen bases. While he may not wow, he can be a good addition to a minor league system.

James Quinn-Irons, OF, George Mason

Quinn-Irons rank for the draft is a little different between MLB and Baseball America, but the one thing they agree on for sure is the kid is tooled up. His junior season, albeit at 22 years old, was insane. He hit .419 with 16 home runs and 35 stolen bases in 61 games. He has elite raw power and speed and could be a plus defender in the outfield.

PITCHERS:

Joey Volini, LHP, Florida State

Volini is a left-handed pitcher who fits the mold of some lefties the Astros have in the system. While not the most dominant stuff, he knows how to pitch and gets outs with two solid breaking balls. As a junior at Florida State, Volini posted a 3.50 ERA with 105 strikeouts in 87.1 innings.

Lucas Mahlstedt, RHP, Clemson

The rare relief pitcher, Mahlstedt was dominant this season for Clemson. As the closer, the right-hander posted a 3.00 ERA but had an impressive 8 BB/61 K in 48 innings picking up 15 saves. I have no clue where he might end up in the draft, but adding relief pitchers always seems like a good idea.

Dominic Fritton, LHP, North Carolina State

Fritton has been a three year starter for North Carolina State and has improved every year. The left-hander struck out 107 over 86.2 innings in 2025 while posting a 4.47 ERA. Control has been an issue at times, but he can hit 96 MPH and adding lefties to the system who can generate some swing and miss would be nice to see.

Jacob Rogers, RHP, Texas Tech

Rogers was the Friday night starter in High School but has an unfortunate run of luck in college with some injuries, though luckily none effecting the elbow of his throwing arm. While he didn’t pitch much in 2025, he showed out with his stuff sitting 94-96 MPH and touching 99 MPH. A hard worker in the gym, Rogers would be a worthy gamble to get into a professional development system.

SENIOR SIGNS:

Every year, teams try and target some seniors to add some quick talent to the system and get some prospects in at under-slot prices. Here are some seniors who performed well and I would like to see in the system.

Jake Winnay, 1B, Wake Forest

Winery is a big first baseman who put together a good college career at Wake Forest. After hitting .297 as a junior, he followed that up with a .296 average as a senior improving his walk to strikeout ratio. He’s also connected on 35 home runs over the last two seasons combined (119 games).

Eddie King, CF, Louisville

King has consistently improved every year while at Louisville. He has a .807 OPS as a sophomore, 1.073 as a junior and 1.185 as a senior. His senior year saw him hit .367 with 19 doubles and 17 home runs over 55 games. He also had a .806 OPS with wood bats in the Cape Cod League in 2024.

Wallace Clark, SS, Duke

Clarke is older than the typical college senior at 23 years old, but he put together a really strong season for Duke in 2025. The switch hitting shortstop hit .307 with 55 walks to just 34 strikeouts, while connecting on 18 doubles and 9 home runs. He also performed well with wood bats in the Cape Cod hitting .304 with a .905 OPS in 15 games.

Matt King, SS, Arizona State University

King is a shortstop who transferred from University of Texas San Antoion to Arizona State for his senior year. This moved paid off big time as the 22-year-old hit .403 with 20 BB/20 SO, 18 doubles and 7 home runs over 56 games. This didn’t come out of nowhere though as he has hit everywhere in college including .336 as a junior.

Eli Putnam, 2B, Davidson

Putnam played all over the infield in 2025, with majority of his games coming at second base. He had a big year offensively for Davidson in 2025 hitting .349 with 19 home runs and 13 stolen bases in 56 games. He also hit .291 with a .906 OPS in the Cape Cod League in 2024.

Robbie Burnett, 2B/OF, Georgia

Burnett played at UNC Asheville for three years before transferring to Georgia where he had a big senior season. Burnett bats left-handed and in 2025 he hit a career high 20 home runs while batting .307. He also added 17 stolen bases. Another good bat to get into the system.
