Astros Prospect Hotlist: Week Eight

This will be your weekly hot list of prospects who are performing well at the plate and on the mound. Here is last week’s hotlist. Below is the new hotlist for Week Eight.

Who’s Hot At The Plate?

Brice Matthews – Matthews got off to a bit of a slow start this season but has really turned things around. This week the 23-year-old hit .526 with 3 doubles, 2 home runs and 9 runs batted in over 5 games for Sugar Land. He’s hitting .317 with a .986 OPS over his last 29 games.

Shay Whitcomb – Whitcomb had another monster week, culminating in a call-up to the Astros this week. He only played in four games but connected on 5 home runs and drove in 8 runs. He leads all of minor league baseball with 18 HRs and hit .325 with a 1.102 OPS over his last 29 minor league games.

Will Bush – Bush was selected by the Astros with their 16th round pick in 2023 out of Tyler Junior College. At just 21-years-old, he is young for High-A but had a great week hitting .385 with a double, 2 home runs and 4 runs batted in over 4 games. He has a .868 OPS in 33 games this season.

Drew Brutcher – Brutcher has found himself on this list quite a bit this season, and here he is again. This week, the left-handed hitting outfielder batted .412 with 3 doubles, a home run and 4 runs batted in. He’s had a great season to this point hitting .348 in 43 games for the Woodpeckers.

Who’s Hot On The Mound?

Alonzo Tredwell – Tredwell was the Astros 2nd round pick in 2023 and after some injury issues, the right-hander is healthy and back on the mound. This week, he pitched in one game and tossed 5 perfect innings with 4 strikeouts. Overall this year, he has a 3.06 ERA with 39 K in 35.1 innings.

Brett Gillis – Gillis was a 9th round pick in 2022 and has dealt with the injury bug up until this year. The right-hander tossed 5 scoreless innings with 4 strikeouts in his one outing this week. Overall on the season, Gillis has an impressive 2.84 ERA in High-A with 38 K in 31.2 innings.

Bryce Mayer – Mayer has found himself on this list a few times already this season, and he turned in another solid outing this week. In his one start, he went 6 innings allowing just 1 unearned run and 4 strikeouts. Between Single-A and High-A, the right-hander has a 3.18 ERA with 52 K in 39.2 innings.

Andrew Taylor – Taylor is another prospect who has dealt with injuries but is healthy again and showing what made him a second round pick back in 2022. He pitched in two games this week totaling 4 scoreless innings with 7 strikeouts. In just 10.1 innings this year, he had a 1.74 ERA with 12 strikeouts.
