Saturday was a historic night for the Corpus Christi Hooks. Despite moving to Corpus Christi back in 2005, the Hooks have never thrown a no-hitter. That was until Saturday night when Jake Bloss and Cesar Gomez combined to no-hit the San Antonio Missions at Nelson Wolff Stadium in San Antonio, TX.

Bloss has been great for the Astros this year, and even better in Double-A. The right-hander got the start on Saturday night and put up some dominant numbers. He went 6.1 no-hit innings while racking up 6 strikeouts, and did so on only 82 pitches. He worked around some early traffic due to walks, but was able to rack up some strikeouts and keep the no-hitter in tact.

“The slider was working better than usual today, but everything felt pretty solid,” Bloss said. “I started thinking about it a little after the fourth inning was over.”

The defense behind him was great. Zach Cole had a diving catch in left field, Jacob Melton had a diving catch in center field and Collin Price threw out a would be base stealer.

“Defense was unreal. Props to those guys and all the work they put in,” Bloss said. “Multiple SportsCenter plays saved some extra base hits and made this a pretty cool game.”

This game dropped Bloss’ Double-A ERA down to 1.61. He has allowed 19 hits in 44.2 innings with the Hooks.

Cesar Gomez entered the game in the 7th inning with one out and made quick work of the Missions’ hitters with a groundout and flyout. In the 8th, Gomez struck out two and made a highlight reel play himself for the last out of the 8th.

Gomez had a quick first and second out in the 9th and in stepped Ripken Reyes. Gomez included a soft bouncer to Sacco converted the 4-3 groundout as the Hooks completed the no-hitter.  Gomez finished his night tossing 2.2 perfect innings with 3 strikeouts. He was able to drop his season ERA down to 1.29.

A historic night for the Corpus Christi Hooks!
