Astros Minor League Recap: April 5th, 2018

Minor league baseball opened the season last night with all four full-season teams in action. See the results below.

AAA: Fresno Grizzlies (0-1) lost 10-2 (BOX SCORE)

Fresno started off the season a bit shaky last night. Hauschild got the start and was roughed up early allowing 7 runs in 2.1 innings before being pulled. The Grizzlies didn’t score their first run until the 6th when Ferguson scored on a White RBI single. Unfortunately, it was already 8-0 going into the 6th inning. The Grizzlies would get one more run in the 7th on a Kemp sac fly but the early deficit was too much to overcome.

AA: Corpus Christi Hooks (0-1) lost 5-4 (BOX SCORE)

F. Valdez got the start last night and while he gave up 2 runs in the first inning, he would settle down to throw 4 scoreless innings after that picking up 4 Ks in the 5 IP. The Hooks got their first run of the season in the 3rd inning from a rehabbing Gurriel RBI double. In the 5th inning they would pick up 2 runs on a Ritchie sac fly and Tanielu RBI double to take a 3-2 lead. Gurriel would add an RBI single in the 6th to make it 4-2. James relieved Valdez and struck out 7 over 3 innings but allowed 2 runs. Ferrell pitched the 9th and allowed a walk-off with two outs as the Hooks fell 5-4.

A+: Buies Creek Astros (0-1) lost 4-3 (BOX SCORE)

Buies Creek got off to a nice start scoring a run in the first inning on a Toro-Hernandez sac fly. Alcala got the start last night but struggled early giving up 3 runs in the first inning and another in the second inning. Scheetz and Saldana relieved Alcala and both had scoreless outings. The Astros picked up a run in the 3rd and another in the 6th on a McCormick RBI triple but were unable to score again dropping this one 4-3.

A: Quad Cities River Bandits (0-1) lost 2-0 (BOX SCORE)

Rough offensive night for the River Bandits in the opener. They managed just 6 hits on the night with only one being for extra bases. Sandoval got the start and allowed 2 runs over 4 innings of work. The bullpen was decent with scoreless outings, though Rosado walked 5 in his 3.2 scoreless innings. The offense was just unable to get anything going.
