Houston Astros Draft JJ Matijevic #75 Overall
With the 75th pick in the 2017 MLB Draft the Astros have selected SS JJ Matijevic from the University of Arizona.
Matijevic is a 6’0, 210 lbs left-handed hitting and throwing 1B . Previously drafted in the 22nd Round by the Red Sox, his first two years at Arizona were underwhelming, but Matijevic broke out as a Junior, hitting .383/.436/.633/1.069 with 10 HR, 65 RBI, 57 R, 30 2B, 23 BB, and 38 K. He was a big piece of an Arizona team that finished 38-21 and 4th in the PAC-12 in 2017, but was upset in the Regionals by Sam Houston St.
Matijevic has improved at the plate immensely each year, improving his swing mechanics to help him grow. He has a sharp eye at the plate and doesn’t swing at too much junk. He’s a good first baseman defensively, having only made 2 errors during his junior year. Matijevic will have to prove he can keep the power around in Pro-Ball, and needs to improve a few tools defensively, but he looks to be a solid addition to the Astros farm system. Time will tell the Astros exactly what they have in Matijevic.
Congratulations to JJ Matijevic on being drafted to the Houston Astros!
