Astros Minor League Recap: May 29th, 2017

Another day of baseball in the books. See how the teams and prospects performed in their games last night.

AAA: Fresno Grizzlies (22-30) won 10-3 (BOX SCORE)

Thornton has seemingly gone unnoticed in the Astros system. He continues to pitch well though as he went 6 innings last night allowing just 2 hits and 1 run. While his ERA is a bit up this season, his last two outings have been solid and owns a career 3.81 ERA in the minors. Fresno got on the board in the 4th inning getting an RBI single from Hernandez, RBI single from Moran, RBI single from Reed and a Tucker sac fly.

In the 5th inning Reed added to the lead connecting on a 2 run HR, his 7th HR of the season. Fresno put the game away in the 8th when they scored 4 runs on a White RBI single and a Fisher 3 run HR, his 12th HR of the season. Fisher is now hitting .337 with 14 2B, 12 HR, 33 RBI in 48 games this season. Fisher is also hitting .390 over his last 10 games.

Note: Moran has 13 RBI in his last 10 games.

AA: Corpus Christi Hooks (26-24) OFF

A+: Buies Creek Astros (30-22) won 13-4 (BOX SCORE)

Franklin Perez got the start last night and while he wasn’t great (3.1 IP, 2 ER), the offense picked him up. After falling behind 2-0, Buies Creek put up 4 runs in the 2nd inning on a Martin RBI double and a Birk 3 run HR, his 5th of the season and 2nd in his last 4 games. They would get 2 more runs in the 3rd inning on a Porter RBI double and a Michelena RBI single.

In the 6th inning, Tucker connected on a solo HR, his 9th HR of the season. Buies Creek would get 3 more runs in the 7th on a bases loaded walk to Hermelyn and a 2 run double from Rogers. Rogers is hitting .375 over his last 10 games for Buies Creek. Michelena added a 2 run single in the 9th to extend the lead. Ferrell was solid in relief striking out 4 over 3.1 scoreless innings. Hernandez pitched a scoreless 9th to close it.

Note: Rogers is hitting .282 with a .955 OPS over 39 games this season.

A: Quad Cities River Bandits (25-24) won 7-3 (BOX SCORE)

Quad Cities got the scoring started early getting 2 runs in the first on an Alvarez RBI single and another run scoring on a groundout. After Beloit tied the game at 2, Quad Cities immediately re-took the lead with back to back HR from Robinson and Franco. Whitley got the start last night but only went 3 innings due to a high pitch count. In those 3 innings he allowed 2 runs.

Blanco relieved Whitley and pitched well allowing just 1 run over 4 innings with 6 strikeouts. Quad Cities added 2 more runs in the 4th on another HR from Robinson, this time a 2 run shot. In the bottom of the 7th, Benedetti connected on a solo HR, his first HR of the season. Hill tossed 2 scoreless innings to close it out.

Note: Benedetti is hitting .400 with 12 BB/5 SO over his last 10 games.
