Astros Minor League Recap: May 24th, 2017

Another day of baseball in the books. See how the teams and prospects performed in their games last night.

AAA: Fresno Grizzlies (18-29) lost 5-3 (BOX SCORE)

The game started out well for Fresno as they scored twice in the first inning on a White 2 run HR. Thorton got the start and only went 4 innings allowing 3 runs, 2 earned. Fresno picked up their 3rd run in the 3rd on a Moran sac fly. The game would stay tied at 3 until the 7th when Tacoma would take a 4-3. Tacoma added on 1 more run in the 8th to make it 5-3.

Note: White picked up 3 hits bringing his season average to .280

AA: Corpus Christi Hooks (23-23)

GAME 1 lost 3-2 (BOX SCORE)

Winkelman made his Double-A debut yesterday in game 1 and pitched well allowing just 1 run over 6 innings with 5 strikeouts. He left the game with a lead thanks to a Ferguson solo HR in the 3rd and a Davis RBI single in the 5th. Unfortunately, Thome couldn’t hold the lead allowing 2 runs over the final 2 innings.

Note: Winkelman now has 6 BB/51 K in 38.1 innings this season

GAME 2 won 5-2 (BOX SCORE)

Corpus got a nice start from Ramirez last night as he struck out 8 over 4.2 innings while allowing just 1 run. Woodward got the scoring started with an RBI single in the first inning. In the 2nd, Stubbs came through with a 2 run single to make it 3-0. Ferguson added a 2 run single in the 6th inning to make it 5-1. Stutzman picked up the win allowing 1 run over 2.1 innings.

Note: Ferguson is hitting .412 over his last 10 games

A+: Buies Creek Astros (28-18) won 8-3 (BOX SCORE)

Perez made his return to the mound last night allowing 3 runs over 2.1 innings. So while not a great performance, it is nice to see him back out there. Buies Creek jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with an RBI groundout from Tucker and another run scoring on an error. Rogers connected on a solo HR in the 2nd, his first since his promotion to High-A. They would get 3 more that inning on a 2 run single from Cesar with 1 more scoring on an error. Porter added an RBI single in the 3rd to make it 7-3. Rogers capped off a great game with another solo HR in the 5th. The game would end after 5 innings due to weather.

Note: Straw is hitting .353 over his last 10 games

A: Quad Cities River Bandits (22-22) lost 7-4 (BOX SCORE)

One rough inning lost it for Quad Cities last night. The River Bandits jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the 2nd on an RBI double from Jones and a 2 run double from Duarte. Peoria put up 5 runs in the 5th inning on just two hits. All 5 runs were charges to Sanabria as he went just 4.1 innings. He was relieved by Whitley who allowed 1 run over 2.2 innings with 4 strikeouts. Quad Cities would get 1 in the 5th on an Almonte RBI single but Peoria got 2 more runs to ice it late.
