Astros Ink Pair of International Pitching Prospects

Credit: Kiel Maddox

On Sunday, the Astros signed a pair of right-handed pitching prospects , according to the minor league transactions page.

The first pitching prospect is right-hander Julio Sanchez. Sanchez, who is 18-years-old, joins the Astros system from the Dominican Republic. He is listed at 6’1″ and 201 lbs. The second prospect is right-hander Juan Mieses. Mieses is also 18-years-old and from the Dominican Republic. He is listed at 6’1″ and 200 lbs.

They were both assigned to the Dominican Summer League teams in the Astros system and should start playing in games this summer. Other information is limited on them right now, but now that they are signed we should start getting some reports.

Ramirez, Rives Off to Nice Start

Back in the 2023 signing period, the Astros signed a 16-year-old infielder, German Ramirez, for a $1.2 million bonus. This season he has made his stateside debut playing in the Florida Complex League at just 17-years-old. He is off to a nice start so far hitting .283 with just 4 strikeouts in 14 games.

Ramirez, who was admired by scouts for his lean and athletic build, has good hands and a good arm. His size could push him off of shortstop, but he could excel at third or outfield. He is aggressive at the plate with good bat speed, so nice to see the strikeouts low to start his career.

The Astros also signed an outfielder last year, Luis Rives from Cuba for $800,000. The 19-year-old is playing stateside in the Florida Complez League and is enjoying a good start to his pro career. The switch-hitter is hitting .276 with 3 doubles, 1 homer and a .759 OPS in 9 games.
