The Houston Astros gave Will Wagner an extra week of play to end the season, promoting the infielder to Triple-A Sugar Land on Tuesday. Wagner missed nearly two months this year, recovering from surgery to remove the hook of the hamate bone in his right hand.
Wagner wrapped up his time in Double-A on Sunday, slashing .309/.385/.507 with 16 doubles and seven home runs. After 56 games with the Hooks, the lefty arrived in Sugar Land for six more, a move similar to Joe Perez’s promotion near the end of last season.
“He’s done nothing but hit since I’ve known about him, so he’s someone to be excited about,” Space Cowboys manager Mickey Storey said. “I’m glad he’s getting a run here this last week to see what he can do at this level, going into the offseason and then next year.”
Storey managed Wagner in the 2022 Arizona Fall League, where Wagner thrived. The lefty slashed .346/.433/.712 with six doubles and three home runs in 14 games. He started all 14 games at third base.
“He was someone that I was really excited about going into the season,” Storey said. “He held his own in big league camp. He’s always displayed real hitters’ qualities from what I’ve seen. I’ve been looking to have him all year to be honest.”
Wagner, 25, made his Triple-A debut Tuesday, batting second and starting at third base. The lefty went 2 for 4 with a double, a run and a strikeout.
“For me, he’s inserted right at the top of the order,” Storey said. “I have high hopes for him in his career, so I’m excited that we get to spend a week together.”
