The Houston Astros will have two prospects representing the organization with the Tigres de Aragua of the Venezuelan Professional Baseball League in the near future. Miguel Palma signed with Tigres on Thursday, joining right-handed pitcher José Guedez as a future contributor.
Palma, a Venezuelan-born catcher, slashed .259/.342/.440 between High-A Asheville and Single-A Fayetteville. The righty posted a better offensive line with the Tourists, though, sporting a .976 OPS in 113 plate appearances. A season-ending injury to Nerio Rodriguez and an offensive resurgence from C.J. Stubbs, who jumped back to Double-A, opened a promotion for Palma last summer.
Palma arrived early last week to minor-league spring training in West Palm Beach, Florida. The report date for all Astros minor-league players is March 13.
In the past year, Sean Russi of Always Us Sports Group started representing Palma, one of the recent Houston prospects to sign with an agency. The other prospect to sign with an agency is Guedez. The Dominican Summer League standout is represented by MDR Sports Management, which also represents fellow DSL farmhand José Fleury.
